Facial Recognition System Now Operational at Multan Airport too

Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) spokesperson confirmed on Friday that Multan has become the fourth Pakistani city to have Artificial Intelligence (AI) induced Facial Recognition System (FRS) in place. Earlier, this system was only operational in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi airports.

What is Facial Recognition System?

A facial recognition system is a computer technology that can identify or verify a person’s identity from a digital image or video frame from a video source. It uses algorithms and machine learning to analyze and compare facial features, such as the distance between the eyes, the shape of the nose and mouth, and other unique facial characteristics.

Applications of Facial Recognition System

There are several applications of facial recognition system. Some of these are mentioned below:

  1. Security

One of the most common applications is in security and access control. Facial recognition technology can be used to verify an individual’s identity trying to access a secure location.

  1. Law Enforcement

This technology can also be used in law enforcement to identify known criminals and suspects and in border control to verify the identity of travelers.

  1. Marketing and Advertising

Facial recognition systems can also be used in marketing and advertising, where they can analyze customer demographics and track the effectiveness of advertising campaigns.

  1. Healthcare Industry

Additionally, these systems can be used in the healthcare industry to monitor patient health and detect possible signs of illness or disease.

Facial recognition technology has a wide range of applications and is used in many industries.

Pakistan – A Firm State

Pakistan has long been facing many internal and external security challenges.

Internal Challenges

On the internal front, Pakistan has been struggling with terrorism and extremism for several years. Militant groups and insurgents have been carrying out attacks on civilians, law enforcement agencies, and government installations. In addition, Pakistan has faced challenges related to sectarian violence, ethnic tensions, and political instability. These issues have led to sporadic violence and unrest in different parts of the country.

External Challenges

On the external front, Pakistan has a tense relationship with neighboring India, which has led to several military conflicts over the years. The ongoing conflict in Kashmir is a significant source of tension between the two countries. Pakistan also faces security challenges from Afghanistan, where militant groups have been able to operate with relative impunity.

Overall, Pakistan’s security challenges are complex and multifaceted. The government and security forces are working to address these challenges, but there is still a long way to go.

Facial Recognition System to Cope with Security Challenges in Pakistan

Pakistan is using facial recognition technology to enhance its security measures. The Pakistani government has deployed a National Automated Facial Recognition System (AFRS) to help law enforcement agencies identify criminals and terrorists. The system is being used to match the facial features of suspects with the images stored in the government’s existing databases. It helps security agencies in tracking down criminal and terrorist elements quickly and efficiently.

Moreover, the Pakistani government employs facial recognition technology to issue identity cards, passports, and driving licenses. It ensures that the documents are given to the rightful owners and minimizes the chances of fraud.

Facial Recognition System at Airports

Pakistan has been working on installing facial recognition systems at airports. One recent development in this regard is the installation at Multan airport. PCAA spokesperson stated that this system would greatly help authorities monitor cross-border transportation, curbing illegal activities across the border. Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) has offered its services to impart required skills to the officials of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Facial Recognition technology is helping Pakistan enhance its security measures, and the government is continuously exploring new ways to leverage this technology to improve society.
